DiY Kitchen Counter Makeover Cheap

This is my kitchen cabinet makeover I just did at my home.. With tile, epoxy, grout, and drywall mud used, it has a very different outcome from a lot of normal kitchen counters.

The Before Pictures Of My Counter Top

So for this project I decided that my kitchen counters were starting to look a little bit horrific! I had at least 3 of my old tile pieces I had laid about a year ago that were broken and needing replaced badly. So it was definitely getting to be overdue on time to makeover the kitchen a little.

I have to admit that when I very first started getting into the home interior decorating, and diy projects, I really sucked at it. I have come to terms with these facts. But I have to say that I have become better at it as I have went along. As you will probably be able to see in my projects that I post sometimes. This one here I definitely think is a lot better than a lot of my stuff I have done in the past.

But it is like I say, practice makes perfect. Though I do not stick to one thing long enough to become a master at it. I like to bounce around too much. One of my many faults in life. I get bored with things easily. That is why I bounce around from project to project. It is whatever I am feeling that particular day, is what I will work on.

My tile kitchen counter top I just redid.. Finished it up with epoxy to cover and protect it.

So anyways what I did with this project was to tear away all of my old stuff I had on my counters first. I took up all of the old tile pieces I had laid and then proceeded to scrub and clean underneath it. And it was a mess I will tell you. Once I got all of that cleaned up and ready to go, I then laid my grout down in the area that I was going to start working on first.

You will want to use your trial to spread your grout all around evenly. And then start laying your pieces of tile down on top of your grout. I started from the back and moved forward with mine. Until I reached the edge of my counter. And the way that I figured it with my tile, it worked out where I didn’t have to cut any pieces for them to fit just right.

Once again these tile pieces were a lot of pieces that I got out of our local flooring dumpster. And then the glass pieces in the middle I got from our local thrift store for $3 for the whole box of 30. So were talking like .10 cents a tile piece. So you can say that this project was done super cheap!

Now you will want to wait for a day for your tile pieces to dry all of the way. Then you will go over all of your tile and fill in all of your spaces with your grout. Now I ended up using sanded grout on mine. The spaces between my pieces of tile were pretty small however.

And if your spaces are 1/8″ or smaller you are supposed to use non sanded grout. Mine worked out fine, and I did mine like this because I knew I was going to be going over all of it with epoxy. So it really did not matter is I looked at it.

If you are not going to go over yours with epoxy however, you may want to reevaluate the sanded versus non sanded grout thing. I am a newby to all of this and no expert by far. I am learning as I go along basically. And so I am just sharing how I have done things with my projects, and how they have turned out.

If you want to know more about the really proper procedures on doing some of these things I would encourage you to seek out some professionals at this on the internet. I do not want to give anyone the wrong ideas on how these things are supposed to be done.

Hopefully one day I can claim to be an expert on these subjects, but as of today I definitely am not. So moving on. After you grout your tile pieces and make sure they are filled in evenly all throughout your counter top, you will want to let it dry for at least one day.

So in normal circumstances the next thing you would want to do would be to seal your grout. But this was not normal circumstances. So I went straight to the epoxy. But first I had to do something else to fix the lip of my counter tops.

Here is a picture of the counter before I got started. You see the front of it with the white part? That is my problem area.

So I had a 2 inch area that looked hideous in my mind. You can see it above in the picture of the before of my counter.  I have had issues with trying to figure out what to do in that area to make it look good. And so far to date I had tried different types of wallpaper type deals and painting it. With none of them really working out the way I had hoped.

Once again I am new to all of this. And I am usually trying to do things on a shoestring budget as they call it. So I am normally working with materials I have gotten for dirt cheap or free. Since I never seem to have the extra money to just go out and buy exactly what I want or really need to do a particular job with. So I decided to try something really different.

Since I started working with epoxy I have been obsessed with using it on different things to see the effects, or trying it out on things that might be needing fixed. Just to see what the stuff would do. So everything around my home has been getting an epoxy makeover for the last 7 months lol.

Even the dogs got a little bit of an epoxy makeover when each of them got into a little bit by brushing up on a project I had drying. Then ended up with something else sticking to them because of the epoxy. Needless to say, it was a bad scene when the something else got stuck and they were trying to get away from it!

Little lick brought down a few different things and about wiped my knees out with a flying object when he took flight because of some plastic that got stuck to his backside area. And Katie did end up taking out a printer of mine when she got freaked out by something that got stuck to her and she took off in a mad dash.

Taking down a big shelf I had, that ultimately was what took out the printer underneath it. Then not long ago I got my bare foot stuck to some plastic that I had an epoxy tree stump on while working on it.

So let me tell you, we have had some mishaps around my place concerning epoxy. So I would definitely encourage those of you out there who might start working with epoxy to be a little more careful than I have been in the past!

I admit that I will do some really dumb things at times. Looking back on them wondering what the hell I was thinking! And pondering on how I have managed to get by so far in life. FOR REAL!

Moving on from memories of the dumb things I can do. I eventually decided to try my drywall look I had been working on around my place. And because we all know that drywall is not going to work around an area that gets wet and gets pretty dirty with dishes and meals getting prepared on it, so I epoxied over the drywall.

I got thinking about it and I knew that the only way to put something on the lip and make it work and look good would be to paint it. Because of the curve I could get nothing to really stick to it right.

So that was my predicament and so my solution ended up being drywall mud. Now granted I could have painted it and just epoxied over to paint in order to protect the paint from the traffic of being a counter top right by the kitchen sink area.

But as I said I was obsessed with doing drywall mud on my walls at the time and so I also wanted this to look a little textured. That way it did not just go from tile pieces that stick up from your counter to just flat going down the curve.

I always thought that it just did not quite look right when I did that in the past. And I had not discovered epoxy back when I had tried different approaches to fixing up my counter tops. And so, not only did I think they didn’t look quite right, I could never keep the paint on and looking good as time went by.

Talk about live and learn! The painting of the lip on the counter top right in an area that gets pretty wet most of the time, did not go over well at all in the past.

But I was new to all of this stuff. And I cannot be told anything of course! I am one of those hard headed individuals who likes to do things the hard way first. And learn my own hard lesson, rather than listening to someone else or even just put some time into researching something the right way.

I admit it is a bad fault of mine. To want to just go off and do something without really researching into it how the right way is to do it. I am a fly by the seat of my pants type of girl, I think is how the saying goes.

And it has definitely cost me a lot of supplies that were wasted, (good thing I get very cheap or free supplies most of the time) and a lot of my time, that was wasted. But like I said, Hard Headed, I know I am.

Back to my counter top, I have to say that this idea of mine, actually did turn out alright this time. I at least came up with the idea based on the knowledge I have gained over this last year of working with epoxy and drywall. Yet I had never heard of anyone doing this. And I did not seek out anything on the internet to see if others had tried it before. I decided to just try it for myself. I figured that it would be easy enough to clean up after if it did not turn out well.

So what I did was to take my drywall mud and I spread it over the area that I was wanting to do. I then would take my little scrub brush I had, and just start dabbing it against the mud I spread out. Until I had every bit of it looking textured. I have also done some of my walls like this. For some reason I became fascinated with this look after one of my ex boyfriends showed me an apartment he had redone, and the walls were textured with drywall mud.

I absolutely loved how it looked in his living room of the small apartment. So I never got it out of my head after that. And finally when I started doing these blogs, and I was doing projects around the trailer that I could blog about, I remembered what he told me on how to get that look.

And it was over from there. I have been getting some big things of drywall mud and having all kinds of fun with experimenting with the different looks, and colors, I can come up with.

So after I got all of my drywall mud looking as if it were having a bad hair day with spikes, I then let it dry for 24 hours. When it was all the way dry, I then made up my epoxy resin. It did not take a whole lot of it to go over the area that I wanted to do.

I also laid down a large piece of plastic underneath my edge where I would be applying it. This way I would not have to worry about what kind of a mess it would be making. Because no matter how thin you put it on, you will still have a small drip that will make it’s way down.

So rather than fight with the drip, you just lay some plastic right under the length of your entire edge. And relax until it is all the way dry. And once it is dry all the way, you can do pretty much anything to it and you won’t have to worry about ruining your drywall mud. It is completely sealed and protected by the epoxy!

So I really ended up liking my counter top edges. And the look went very well with the rest of my tile I had laid. Not to mention that I will not have to worry about anything happening to them now that the epoxy is over them. So I hope somebody out there enjoys this post and perhaps tries their own kitchen counter makeover.

So good luck and happy projecting!

My Counter Top After

I am 44 and have 3 grown daughters. And I have 1 granddaughter who I am crazy about! I am a recovering heroin addict who has now been clean for almost 5 years to the day. Well I should say clean from needles for that amount of time. I can’t say completely clean because my Dr’s had me on methadone pills for a while when I first was released from the hospital. I then self medicated myself and went to a Dr for a while for suboxone. Which I then used to get myself off of the methadone pills. I was paralyzed 5 years ago as a result of using needles. My Dr’s never thought that I would walk again with the amount of infection they had to remove from my spinal cord. Yet I am now walking! Unassisted even. I do not require a cane or anything to walk now, is what I mean by unassisted. I do better with a cane but I can actually do it without it. And the Dr’s really never thought that would happen. So I am now in school again and almost have my associates degree in general studies. I have been focusing on going to school to be a drug and alcohol counselor. I have had some hiccups along the way since I suffer from depression a lot since this happened. But I am determined to never give up. So I hope that you will follow me either on my blog or my Facebook pages and help support getting addicts the help that they really need. Instead of the stereotype labels they get here in America as well as the criminal label they acquire when they cannot just quit their use of drugs or alcohol.
